I would say that the Grey County road race was one of the hardest races that I have ever done. Not because it was 130km (my longest race yet), but because of the course and issues that came up. I consider myself decent at hill climbing but when we finished the race on one of the hardest hills in the whole course, I had nothing left in my legs and I fell off the group. Unfortunately I had to catch the main group twice during the race, the first time was not because of a good reason; I needed use the washroom. When I got going and was trying to catch the group, the support vehicles that are meant to help did nothing, I guess taking a bio break is not the same as getting a mechanical. The second time I fell off was on the hill that goes up to Banks; this was right after I caught the group the first time. Since I used up a lot of energy to get back on I didn’t have the strength to stay with the main group going up the hill. At the top I managed to get into a small group with a DEC Express rider, an Ottawa rider and a Next Wave rider. We worked hard to catch back on, after a really hard effort we managed to get back in once we reached Ravena. This all happened on the first lap and I felt drained; luckily for me the second half of the race was not as intense as the first lap. Zach and Hayden from Wheels of Bloor both took off halfway through the second lap, this lead to their first and second place at the finish, the reason is because no one felt like going after them, this tends to happen a lot. Overall it was a fun race and I learned from it.

In Markham was the first race of the road season. I won the ITT by 1 sec. The road race was the best part of the race. I won by 46 secs to 2nd, who had 36 secs to 3rd (who was in the main group). At the start I attacked right at the beginning, but it failed. But my second attack worked well. There was a little lip where the group slowed down and that was where I attacked. I had a little gap from the group on the second lap. At the end of that lap the next rider caught up to me. We were together for 2 laps when we reached that same lip I attacked him with 5 or 6 laps to go. I was solo for the rest of the race. And I won. All the other racers did a great job too. Good job to everyone. :) By Cyrena Hill
Today in Markham was my first bicycle race. There were 7 girls in my category. At first I was scared. But when I got started I was not. I got 6th in ITT. It was kind of hard. But next time I think I can go faster. In the road race I got 7th place. I stayed with the pack in the beginning. But lost them on the 2nd lap. I was not in the right gear. My gear was too spiny. I do not know why I didn't shift, but next time I will and I will go faster and stay with the group. I had fun and I'm excited to do it again in Barrie. Youth Cup #1 - Morning Glory Youth Cup

This morning I took to the start line of my 3rd Paris to Ancaster race. As per usual it was a crazy start, with everyone shuffling for position going into the first gravel and rail trail section. After having a fairly good start I stuck with David Staples and a bunch of other riders for the first FAST section of rail trail. As soon as we turned into the first off road trail, everything split up. I rode my own pace for the next little while, until at about 15km into the race I caught up to Mandy Dreyer and Nick Friesen. From there the 3 of us stuck together for pretty much the rest of the race. This was completely different than any other year I've done the race, for that reason of having people to work with, as opposed to riding by myself like other years. The rest of the race went by pretty quick as Nick was pushing the pace pretty hard. We stuck together until about 13km to go when Mandy sent us off ahead to finish the race and hopefully secure a top 5 spot in the women's field. Nick and I stayed together right until the line, and I couldn't have done the race without his help and total encouragement! We clocked in at 2:22:30 making our average speed 29km/h over the 69km race a very quick pace for all the off road sections there were. To top off the amazing race, I then found out I finished 4th outright in the super competitive women's category where the podium was all pro international cyclocross riders, that I was pretty thrilled about!!! Can't wait for next year, and for the cross season to be begin! By Ali van Yzendoorn
The second road O-Cup of the season took place in the cute little town of Calabogie. Despite the cold weather (3 degrees), the sun was shining and everyone was eager to race. We arrived at the race course at around 730am, picked up my numbers, and headed toward the Kallisto-FCV trailer for a team talk before the race. After gathering a few strategies and getting on the trainer for warm up, my teammates and I headed over to the start line. As always, butterflies were in my stomach while we waited for the cue to start. There were about 50 women in this race, and the course was actually a 5km race car track, which was pretty cool! There were so many corners and a few slight inclines, which made for some interesting racing. We had to complete 11 laps of this track. By the time we had one lap to go, the speed picked up and around the last corner everyone was fighting for the final sprint. I finished 4th in the junior women, and 11th overall. My teammate, Naomi Desousa placed 1st and Andrea Noordeman -DaSilva placed 5th. Another great day of racing for Kallisto-FCV p/b Toyo Tires! |
